For one thing, the eternal life is conditioned
on believing, not on performing a lot of good deeds. For another,
when you believe, it says you "have" eternal life, not
you "will get" eternal life at the end of the rainbow
if you live a good enough life, but that you have it now. In other
words, it's a present possession. It's also important to keep in
mind, if you really could lose it, then it was never eternal in
the first place.
When we make that decision to believe in, or
to place our trust in Christ, at that moment we receive eternal
life---no strings attached and no conditions.
