You could start with John, or else just read
the book of Acts. Acts is about the spread of Christianity throughout
the known world in the first several decades after the resurrection
of Jesus. Acts picks up the story right where Matthew, Mark, Luke
and John leave off. It also provides the historical backdrop for
the rest of the New Testament, which is primarily a series of letters
written by the close disciples of Jesus. People like Peter, James,
John and Paul. Some of the letters are written to groups of Christians
in a certain city, while some are written to individual people,
like Timothy.
