Relating this to what the Bible says, both Old and New Testament believers had a recognition of sin and of guilt and about punishment being actually deserved. They also had a recognition about the need of a sacrifice and that faith was to be placed in the sacrifice. The difference is, the believers in the Old Testament looked forward to when the full and final payment would be made, whereas New Testament believers look back to when the Messiah actually made the payment. Their trust is in the final payment, whereas the Old Testament believers trusted in the temporary ones, the sacrifices.
