We assume that God has to make a cut-off somewhere.
It's like we are all on a ladder climbing our way up to Heaven by
doing good deeds. We're counting on the fact that the cut-off must
be somewhere below the rung on which we're standing. Now if that
were God's system, then he'd have to be very arbitrary. "Hey
God, why not lower one more rung so I can get in!" That way
he'd end up approving of a lot of evil.
What the Bible describes is not a grading on
a curve, but rather a pass/fail system. To pass, you have to be
perfect---anything less is failure. God won't dumb down his standard
or approve of any evil.
