When we come to God offering our good deeds
as even a partial payment it not only fails to impress him,
it ends up being the ultimate offense and insult to His great gift
of grace. The only proper response is to humbly accept that offer
of grace and forgiveness.
If someone saved our son's life, even though
we would never insult them by offering to pay, we would be looking
for ways to show gratitude the rest of our lives. That just happens
to be one of the legitimate responses, one of the valid motivations,
for living life in a way that pleases God---one of the good motivations
for doing good deeds. Not to earn forgiveness, but to thank Him
for the forgiveness you've already received.
