Jews have believed in a coming Messiah all throughout their history. They also knew that they didn’t measure up to God’s requirement of holiness, even before the law was given to Moses. They also knew that a payment had to be made in order to satisfy God’s demands for justice. They knew God was not lenient in the sense that he couldn’t ignore sin or let it go unpunished, and that’s why they offered sacrifices which God told them he would accept as payment for sin and, is the basis of forgiveness---and God did this because they offered a sacrifice in faith. God said he would accept that sacrifice as a symbol of the ultimate sacrifice that the promised Messiah would one day offer.
