It still seems I should 'do' something
The problem is that as soon as you begin to come up with a reasonable and godly definition of what that something might be, that's when you begin to realize the 'real' problem. We always fall so far short of that something good---remember the analogy about swimming to Hawaii?

The point is not that getting to Heaven by means of a gift is too easy. The point is that earning our way is absolutely impossible. We all fall so far short of the requirements of a holy, a perfect, and a just God, that we stand condemned before Him because of our performance. We just can't get there from here that way. There has to be a totally different solution.
