Christians 'pretend'
to be better than everyone else
All of us get turned off when we see hypocrisy. But first, let's
define the term. A hypocrite is someone who lives inconsistently
with the standard he holds up as the way he and others ought to
live.
If that is what hypocrisy is, then wouldn't everyone
be a hypocrite? Because none of us measures up to the way we know
we ought to live. The word for that kind of routine failure is the
word "sin." We all sin, but that doesn't make us all hypocrites---all
hypocrisy is sin, but not all sin is hypocrisy. So, maybe hypocrisy
isn't so much a failure to measure up to a standard, but, pretending
to measure up to a standard, when you know well and good you don't.
