Normally the soldiers of a crucifixion, after
too much time wore on, would break the victims' legs so that they
couldn't hold themselves up and be able to continue breathing. In
other words, basically when they wanted to end this, and wanted
to get on with something else, they would break the legs so that
they would collapse and suffocate. The executioner said, in this
instance, it wasn't necessary to break Jesus' legs because he was
already dead. But, for good measure, he stuck a spear in his side
and blood and water came out---a further indication of death.
