Jesus said it's not only wrong to commit murder,
but that it is wrong to curse your brother or to harbor a grudge.
Not only is it wrong to commit adultery, but it is also wrong to
allow yourself to think lustful thoughts. In other words, it's not
only a sin to commit a wrong act; it's a sin to have the wrong thoughts
and attitudes. The idea is that God not only cares about what we
do on the outside that others can see, but about what's on the inside
of us that no one else may know about. His standard is perfection,
not some 'dumbed' down moral mediocrity.
But that sounds impossible. Surely God can't
really expect perfection. The God of the Bible that has been portrayed
here has been one of love and forgiveness.
