Isn't God supposed
to be 'loving'
It's true that God loves and forgives---but let us not fall prey
to the 'peril of the pendulum'---meaning that a pendulum swings
from one extreme to the other, but never stops in the middle. That's
the way it seems like it is with popular notions about God. One
extreme is to think of God as some heavenly ogre or killjoy, spewing
out hellfire and damnation and brimstone; or it's as if he were
booming a question out from Heaven, "Is anyone down there having
a good time?" Somebody says yes and God shouts back, "Well,
cut it out!" That's a terrible distortion and slander against
the God of the Bible and it causes a lot of damage. But there's
also another equally great error to be avoided on the opposite swing
of the pendulum.
