C.S. Lewis suggests that most of us are like
the child playing with mud pies in the ghetto. Somebody comes along
and offers him a day at the beach, but he turns it down because
he doesn't want to quit playing with the mud pies. The problem from
God's perspective is not that we want too much out of life, but
like that child, we're satisfied with far too little---we could
have had a day at the beach! We settle for material success, ambition,
power, success or alcohol, when God offers us something far deeper
and more satisfying.
